It's been all over the news: Silver Spring has been reborn.
The Silver Theatre is once again a gem known as "Silver 1" of the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center. It's companion Silver Spring Shopping Center is now part of the new town center development called "Downtown Silver Spring." And the place is crowded! Nearby is the former Hecht's department store branch, part of the City Place Mall, and the preserved Montgomery Arms garden apartments. The Tastee Diner has been moved and saved. A little farther away, a portion of the Canada Dry bottling plant is being incorporated into a new apartment complex that will be very close to the meticulously restored Silver Spring Railroad Station. On Georgia Avenue is the building originally known as the North Washington Shopping Center which retains its ensemble of Art Deco details.
These and many other Art Deco buildings, some loved and others unappreciated, will be seen and discussed on this tour, which will be led by ADSW Education Chair Linda Lyons.
The tour will take place rain or shine – so dress accordingly.
We’ll meet at 10:30AM at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD, two and a half blocks north (uphill) from the Metro's Red Line station at Silver Spring. Space is limited, so advance reservations are required. We must receive all orders no later than Wednesday, October 13.

If the tour fills before we receive your order, we will place you on the waiting list. We will not charge your credit card or cash your check unless we have space on the bus for you.
Refund Policy: Because we must contact people on the waiting list to resell your seats, cancellations must be received by October 11. If you call (301) 654-3924 or send email to walkingtour@adsw.org by October 11, you can cancel your reservation for a full refund.

Jaffeson's book, Silver Spring Success: The 300 Year History of Silver Spring, Maryland (Xlibris Corporation, April 2003), covers development from colonial land grants to the present in nearly 40 chapters that highlight significant individuals, explain major events, and identify important institutions. You may not need this much context to enjoy the tour.
