Celebrate Black History Month with the Art Deco SocietySaturday, February 28, 2004 Meet at Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage
U Street was the commercial, social and artistic hub of the city's African American community from about 1900 through the 1950s. Stars like Cab Calloway and Dizzy Gillespie jammed here, rubbing elbows with Howard University intelligentsia. See a 1920s movie palace (the Lincoln Theatre, right), the first black YMCA, a nightclub in a cavern, and the nation's only memorial to African American Civil War soldiers. The tour will take place rain or shine – so dress accordingly. In the event of significant snow or ice the tour will be rescheduled. We’ll meet at 10:45 AM at the Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage, 1816 12th Street, NW, one and one-half blocks from the U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Metro stop on the Green line. Use the 13th Street exit. Walking Tour TicketsMembers: $15 Space is limited, so advance reservations are required. We must receive all orders no later than February 25.
