Ruth Bergman will present a lecture entitled "Furnishing The Nation's Capital: Woodies and Popular Taste in Washington DC, 1925-1940." Bergman will discuss how Woodward& Lothrop, D.C.'s flagship department store, melded modernism with the city's conservative tastes in home decor.
Bergman has an MA in American Decorative Arts from the Parsons School of Design. She is a doctoral student in American Studies and the University of Maryland.
The lecture will be held in Gallery 4 of the Sumner School. The school is located four blocks from the Farragut West Metro station (17th and I Streets) on the Blue and Orange Metro lines. Metered street parking and several garages are nearby.
