Day Trips to Williamsburg or Newport NewsSaturday, April 25 & Sunday, April 26, 2009 The Historic Dover Harbor Pullman Car ADSW or DC Chapter NRHS Members: $189
The Washington DC Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society has invited ADSW members to join NRHS members on their springtime excursions to Colonial Williamsburg or Newport News aboard the restored 1930s Dover Harbor Pullman Car. This special price is offered only to ADSW and NRHS members. Guests are welcome but must pay the nonmember price. Membership will be verified. The Dover Harbor is a restored classic American sleeper-lounge-buffet Pullman car and is the only heavy weight Pullman revenue passenger car still operating in unrestricted train service on the main lines of America. The car, which was built in 1923, has been beautifully restored to its authentic 1930's appearance. Learn more about the Dover Harbor at http://www.doverharbor.com/. Each morning, the Dover Harbor will depart Union Station with Amtrak Regional train #67, stopping briefly in Alexandria to take on additional passengers. White-jacketed attendants will serve breakfast at your table as the Dover Harbor heads south over the trestles spanning scenic tributaries of the Potomac river and through Fredericksburg and Richmond. The Dover Harbor will arrive in Williamsburg shortly before noon. Those choosing Williamsburg as their destination will have about 5 hours to stroll the streets of Colonial Williamsburg. Spring is a perfect time to visit Williamsburg to enjoy the beautiful gardens and comfortable temperatures. The historic area is a short 6-block walk from Amtrak‘s Boundary Street Station. (Dover Harbor fares do not include admission fees to Colonial Williamsburg.) If you have seen Williamsburg recently, you might choose to continue on the Dover Harbor to the end of the line—Newport News. Across the street from the Amtrak station you will find the Virginia War Museum and a park containing a C&O Kanawha steam locomotive. The Mariner's Museum is a short taxi ride from the station. Newport News offers many other attractions, but most will require a taxi ride or long walk. The Dover Harbor will be inaccessible to passengers while it is serviced during the layover. About nine blocks from the Newport News Amtrak station is the restored Art Deco Peninsula Community Theatre, originally the Village Theatre, which opened in 1935.The original neon letters for the Village sign, destroyed in a hurricane, have been replaced. The theatre is located at 10251 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, Virginia. Dover Harbor will depart from Newport News in late afternoon with Amtrak's Regional train #66, stopping at Williamsburg on the way. En route to Alexandria and Washington, a delicious supper will be served along with soft drinks, beer, wine, and cocktails. Note: Track location will be determined the day of the event. Check the departure monitors for Train #67 gate and track assignments at Washington, DC. An NRHS representative will meet passengers at the designated gate. If boarding in Alexandria, Virginia, listen for the departure track announcement.
