Cover of Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living by Phyllis RossThe pioneering modernist Gilbert Rohde was an innovative furniture designer who attained near-celebrity status across the United States in the 1930’s and early 1940’s. In a fascinating talk, decorative arts historian Phyllis Ross positions the designer as a critical connecting force between the early stirrings of American modernism and the distinctively American look of the post-war era.

Ms. Ross will be signing her new book Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living (Yale University Press 3/09), which presents a detailed account of Rohde’s work and life in the context of the first half of the 20th century. You can purchase a copy at the lecture or order online from Amazon.com.
