The Art Deco Society of Washington's 27th annual Exposition of 20th Century Decorative Arts (Expo) will be held May 22-23, 2010, at the Dulles Expo and Conference Center (North Building, Entrance 3) in Chantilly, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, DC. Returning as a standalone Modernism show after three years embedded in a general antiques show, the "Expo" has generated new excitement among both dealers and collectors.

The Dulles Expo Center's conference facility is an ideal location for an upscale Modernism show. The 15,000 square foot center is fully carpeted and features seven large rooms with finished ceilings giving the show a more intimate setting. The large entrance lobby and 200-foot main corridor will give customers many opportunities to mingle with new and old friends, recreating the excitement of Expos past.

The Expo began in 1983 primarily as an Art Deco show, making it the nation's oldest Modernism Show. Held annually at locations in Washington, DC and its Northern Virginia suburbs, the Expo gradually expanded to include other design movements of the 20th century. The 2010 show will include the sale of all 20th Century design movements, including Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Art Moderne, Mid Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern, and Atomic.

Promising to add to the excitement are four new features:

  • A Silent Auction including Scandinavian modern bedroom furniture and a rare Stromberg-Carlson radio/tv/phonograph cabinet.
  • A Guide to Repair and Restoration Services. Among the restoration professionals participating in the show are Lyndi McNulty of Gizmos, providing restoration of paintings, prints, and photographs, and Don Selkirk of Don's Furniture Restorations, providing furniture stripping, refinishing, and restoration. Both Lyndi and Don will be available throughout the show to discuss restoration. Other restorers participating in the show include Larry Kolb of Phone Quest, providing restoration of antique telephones and Richard Kornemann of the Museum Shop Ltd., providing restoration of artwork, paper, and photographs. A full schedule will be posted on the website before the show. Information will also be available on a wide variety of other restoration needs, including metal plating and polishing, watch and clock repair, radio and phonograph repair, ceramic and glass repair, and textile repairs.
  • Door prizes will be awarded.
  • An early buyers preview from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Saturday, May 22.

The number of Exhibitors is up significantly from last year as dealers who left the Expo after it became part of a general antiques show return to the fold. Among the dealers returning to the Expo after dropping out of the joint show are Spencer Weisz Gallery (Chicago) offering vintage posters, Last Century Ltd (Pennsylvania) offering Scandinavian jewelry and lamps, The Gallery Kathlyn (Ohio) offering depression glass and barware, and French Dreams Deco selling vintage prints.

The Expo has strong dealer loyalty including some core dealers such as Deco Doug (Michigan), Greg and Ann Golden (Maryland), and Try to Remember (Maryland) who have been with the show for over 20 years. Still other dealers, including Crawford DePrince (Delaware), Stoulis Design Associates (Pennsylvania), and Sherry G. Selevan Glass (Maryland) will be exhibiting as part of the Expo for the first time.

Attractions located within minutes of the Dulles Expo Center include:

  • The International Gem and Jewelry Show
  • The Smithsonian Institution's Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum
  • Historic Sully Plantation
  • The Manassas (Bull Run) Civil War battlefield national park

Dozens of Hotels and Motels are located within 10 miles of the Dulles Expo and Conference Center.

Located just 3 miles off Interstate 66, Getting to the Dulles Expo Center from anywhere in the mid-Atlantic area is a breeze thanks to detailed driving directions and bus service from the Vienna (Orange Line) Metro station. And, once you get there, thousands of free parking spaces await.
