Alfred Eisenstaedt Exhibit
Hillwood Estate and Gardens

Join the Art Deco Society of Washington for a special day at the Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Gardens to explore the exhibition Mid-Century Master: The Photography of Alfred Eisenstaedt
Eisenstaedt's prominence began in the Art Deco era -- In 1929 he became a professional photographer in Germany, emigrating in 1935 to the United States. In 1936, Eisenstaedt joined Life Magazine, which featured more than 90 of his pictures on its coveers, and published more than 2,500 of his photo stories.
Our visit will include an introductory lecture by curator Megan Martinelli, unlimited access to the exhibit and Hillwood grounds, docent-led tours of the mansion, and optional afternoon tea.

When he photographed her for the November 5, 1965 issue of LIFE Magazine, Alfred Eisenstaedt cemented Marjorie Merriweather Post's place among the most notable people of the twentieth century. Already well-known as a generous philanthropist, businesswoman, and social figure, Post was featured in an eighteen-page spread that showcased her generous spirit and gracious way of life. With his acumen for capturing larger-than-life personalities in natural poses and genuine moments, Eisenstaedt was the perfect photographer for highlighting her distinguishing features.

Hillwood's greenhouses will also be open throughout the day for self tours. Hillwood will also be showing it's 12-minute orientation film every 30 minutes starting at 10 A.M. in the Visitor Center Theater.
